A Guide to Corner Cabinet Solutions

A Guide to Corner Cabinet Solutions

You know that dark place that will have you on your knees and begging for a better solution? Yes, we are talking about the dreaded blind corner cabinet. If you have a typical blind corner cabinet, odds are that you’ve knelt to the ground with a flashlight while digging through the depths of the cabinets to find that one thing you need. If you haven’t had this experience, you’re one of the lucky ones. So, how can we avoid losing a battle with a corner cabinet? The answer is simple: custom storage solutions.

While custom storage is always a game-changer, corner cabinet solutions specifically are next level in that they solve an otherwise frustrating scenario. There are multiple corner cabinet solutions to choose from that will help you maximize storage space in your kitchen. Read on as we walk through some of our favorites and why we love them.

A Guide to Corner Cabinet Solutions

There are a few things to consider before deciding on a corner cabinet solution. First and foremost, you should determine how much space you have to work with. Are you limited to certain dimensions, or do you have some flexibility? Certain corner cabinet solutions will have minimum requirements in terms of the space needed for installation. Knowing what space you have available will help you weed out some options that simply won’t work.

Secondly, you should think about what you plan to store in your corner cabinet. Knowing the end goal will help you choose a solution that best serves that purpose. Even if you don’t know specifics just yet, determining if it’s going to be for smaller pantry items versus large casserole dishes will be a helpful distinction to make. Be strategic about what you choose to store in a corner cabinet to avoid over-cluttering it. A lot of corner cabinet solutions involve some moving parts, so knowing the type of items that will be stored is helpful to ensure efficient functionality.

1. Lazy Susan / Super Susan

There are a few versions of the classic lazy susan which most recognize as the two rotating shelves. The shelves are typically circular and sometimes have what we call a “pie-cut,” depending on how the base cabinetry is shaped. The difference between a lazy susan and a super susan is that a lazy susan has a central vertical rod that supports the shelves while the lazy susan has horizontal supports that the rotating shelves sit on. Both options provide easy access to items as you can rotate the shelves to reach the items in the back. The super susan provides a little more ease of use and more storage space as you can place items in the center of the shelf as well without having to dodge a center rod. This option does use more material though, so it is typically a little more expensive comparatively.

2. Wire Shelf Optimizers

These corner cabinet optimizers transform a typical blind corner cabinet into much more functional storage. The shelves can pull out and over depending on which shelf you need to access. We’ve seen these used for large pots and pans as well as pantry storage. Because of the way these shelves move, we would recommend them for larger and/or heavier items over stacking up smaller items.

3. The Cloud

The cloud is similar to the previous optimizer in that the shelf makes it easier to access the items in the back; however, in this solution, you can access an entire shelf in one motion as opposed to the previous shelves that are split into more sections. The cloud shelves are pulled out in a sort of “S” motion. These shelves maximize corner storage space and would be great for large, bulky items.

4. The Curve

The shelves on the curve are unique in that they are attached to the drawer front, so when you open the drawer, they automatically rotate out with it. This solution would work well for dry goods such as flour, sugar, etc. In this option, you can access the top shelf independently from the bottom with ease. The curve provides maximal storage while functioning very similarly to a regular drawer.

A Guide to Corner Cabinet Solutions

Aside from the already mentioned, there are more corner cabinet solutions, such as the faux drawers above; however, they don’t necessarily maximize the storage space and are more of a design solution than anything. So, there are more options to explore if you’re not as tight on space.
